Choosing Satellite Internet Access As Broadband Alternative

Basics of Satellite Internet Access

Satellite internet access is a relatively new option for upgrading slow dial-up into high-speed internet connections. DIRECTV – the first company in commercial satellite television – has introduced DIRECWAY, for satellite internet access. All broadband services – including satellite internet access – offer faster internet speeds that allow quicker internet surfing, increased speed in downloading software, streaming audio and video, and provide an overall easier experience than compared to dial-up services. Dropped connections and service interruptions by incoming phone calls are eliminated, customers can talk on the phone while online, and there is no waiting for modem connections because the service is always on. The broadband services differ in pricing and in speed.

The Differences between Satellite Internet Access, DSL, and Cable Broadband Services

Cable internet access is the fastest and most preferred of the broadband services with maximum speeds in excess of 40 times that of dialup service. Costs range from $40-50 per month. However, consumers not within cable television service areas cannot take advantage of this mode, while satellite internet access is available to virtually every home.

The next fastest is digital subscriber line (DSL) broadband service with average speeds of 1 Mbps, around 20 times faster than dial-up services, and prices also range from $40-50/month. However, DSL is phone-line based, and availability is limited, as some phone service providers have not upgraded lines to handle broadband frequencies. Again, satellite internet access is readily available to users who do not have DSL as a high-speed internet access option.

Finally, satellite internet access has little limitation other than a clear view of the southern sky. Satellite internet access connects consumers about 8 times faster than dial-up service, still a significant increase for those who have no other choice. However, satellite internet access is the most expensive broadband alternative, with monthly costs ranging from $60-100 per month.
